Injection Therapy for TMJ Disorders and Headache Treatment
If you are someone that grinds or clenches your teeth and jaw, experiences a locking feeling, or has jaw pain, our dentists might recommend injection therapy for you.
A lot of patients wear nightguards to protect their teeth at night, but for some, this is insufficient. Injection therapy in the muscles that are responsible for clenching and grinding can help to relieve your discomfort. When botulinum toxin is injected into the masseter and temporalis muscles, it reduces muscular activity which lessens temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD) symptoms such as headaches, joint and jaw pain, and clenching-related discomfort.
How Can Injection Therapy Help Relieve Pain?
Injection therapy uses a substance called botulinum toxin. It works by emitting neuron blockers that reduce muscular activity. This relaxes the muscles in which the botulinum toxin is injected into.
The injections are administered in very small amounts, measured in units. It is injected into the affected muscles that play a role in causing jaw pain or headaches. The effects of botulinum toxin wear off over time, so for the most effective treatment, we recommend visits approximately every 3-6 months.
Injection Therapy Process:
The first step is booking a consultation with your dentist to evaluate your symptoms and determine whether the injections are a good solution for you. During this thorough consultation, your dentist will review your medical history and treatment goals.
Next, your dentist will determine which areas of your face will need. Your dentist will then begin the injection process in specific areas, such as your jaw muscles and forehead, based on your needs.
It typically takes 14 days to feel the relief from the injections, so a follow-up with your dentist will be booked 2 weeks after the injections to reevaluate the areas. You will return about 3-6 months later, as the results don’t last longer than that.
How Much Do Injections Cost?
The cost of your treatment will vary based on the severity of your condition and the muscles requiring treatment. Please keep in mind that everyone’s needs are unique, and the best way to decide what you’ll need, is to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists. We will be able to determine which areas may be treated and how many units will be required to relieve your symptoms.
